Hydraucyclone separator: desander, desilter and mud cleaner

Desander, desilter and mud cleaner is the most common type hydraucyclone separator machine used in mud cleaning system, like system for oil and gas drilling, water well drilling, Geothermal drilling, Coal Bed Methane drilling, Horizontal Directional drilling and so on.

Hydraucyclone separator desander desilter and mud cleaner is used after shale shaker, and then dessander, desilter is used after desilter. Per the jobsite condition and the mud drilling rig request on mud, only desander or destiler separator can be used, or none of them be used.

There are different type of hydraucyclone separator. They have different features, users can choose the suitable model.

Design 1: Only Desander or desilter hydraucyclone assembly, without underflow shale shaker.

Option models for desander: GNWSE-2S / GNWSE-3S

Option models for desilter: GNWSE-12N / GNWSE-16N

Strong point: The simple type desander and desilter is with side-discharge deisng. It is with small footprint. And price lower.

Weak point: Hydraucyclone is not D100 separator. If there is no shale shaker separator under the hydraucyclone parts, performance will not be very good. Some big size solids may flows into the tank mud system.  

Conclusion: If there are limited space on tank top and users want to save cost. desander and desilter without underflow shale shaker should be a good choice. It is normally used is underground construction system and compact mud system but not used for deep oil and gas drilling.

Design 2: Desander desilter with a small size under flow shale shaker.

Option models for desander: GNZJ752E-1S / GNZJ752E-2S

Option models for desilter: GNZJ752E-8N / GNZJ752E-12N

Strong point: With separate shale shaker under the hydraucyclone assembly, drilling fluids can be separated by screens before falling into tank system. And price is good.

Weak point: The small size shale shaker cannot get very good separation result, and big capacity not available.

Conclusion: It is normally used in compact mud system for HDD, CBM etc… And some workover rig mud system.

Design 3: Desander desilter with a big size under flow shale shaker. Both desander and desilter hydraucyclones can be mounted in the same shale shaker. Compact design and best separation. The price the most high among the 3 designs and performance best. When move the hydraucyclone assembly . It can be used as a separate solids control shale shaker.

Mud recycling system for 750hp Geothermal drilling

What is Geothermal drilling

Geothermal drilling is used for geothermal steam and hot water well drilling. It is a special technology and necessary method for the exploration, exploitation of geothermal fluid.

For the high temperature geothermal drilling, drilling depth is generally 500 meters to 2000 meters, a little more than 2000 meters, mostly in 600 ~ 900 meters. Regariding to the conduction type geothermal field at low temperature, the average depth is 1800 meters, while the geopressured geothermal drilling can reach to 6000 meters depth.

Features of mud recycling system for Geothermal drilling

1) As the temperature of Geothermal drilling is normally higher. There should be mud cooler before mud recycling system and after mud comes out from well head.

2) There should be galvanized grating to cover the tank tops for a better heat-radiation. Checkered plate is not recommended for Geothermal drilling mud recycling system. The heat cannot come out well in this condition.

3) Normally, there is only desander cone in the mud recyclone system. Desilter cone is not used.

4) As the mud temperature is higher, PU hydraocyclone is not suitable for Geothermal drilling mud recycling system, while cast iron cyclones should be used.

5) And in some cases, geothermal drilling rig platform is low, it means the flow height from drilling rig to shale shaker is lower. It gives strict limitation on shaker tank design.

Low cost high quality centrifuge for drilling rig

Decanter centrifuge is the effective equipment used to treat drilling fluids in oil and gas drilling, in CBM drilling or in TBM projects.

Remarks: Normal Chinese brand only use hard surface welding. The protection material is very thin. It is difficult for maintenance or prepare.

3) Bearing brand:

High standard centrifuges use famous brand SKF / FAG original bearing. While economic standard use NSK brand bearing.  

4) VFD control system

High standard centrifuges is 3 VFD for main drive motor, back drive motor and feeding pump. It useS PLC for smart control. The VFD panel is positive pressurized for hazardous areas. And with ATEX or IEC standard for option.

Dewatering unit for drilling waste management system

Applications of dewatering unit
1) Dewatering unit is an important part for waste water treatment.
2) Combined with high speed or super high speed decanter centrifuge, dewatering unit is widely used for water base mud drilling cuttings treatment.
3) Dewatering unit can be used in TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) drilling mud system
4) Dewatering unit can be used in dredging slurry separation system in civil projects. In this case, it is used together with belt compressor.

Flocculants is the most important part to effect dewatering unit performance. In order to insure a better performance of dewatering unit, we should pay attention on below points:
(1) If the surface of the flocculants powder is dissolved too rapidly, there will be particle mutually attached, therefore it will cause the particle interior does not be dissolved completely; the usual operation is to use various types of dispersing and dissolving device.
(2) Per different conditions, the time used to dissolve the flocculants varies. The main factors may as below:
A. The types of flocculants be used;
B. The water quality used as dissolution;
C. The temperature of water
D. The mixing efficiency.
Normally, its takes around 1hour for flocculants powder to be fully dissolved. If the flocculants cannot be mixing completely, it will reduce the performance.

Dewatering unit Design in drilling waste management field
Dewatering unit is usually put into container. GN Solids Control company offers 20ft containerized dewatering unit and 40ft containerized dewatering unit.
Dewater centrifuge for dewatering unit can be put into the container, inside the container or even on the top of container.

When dewatering unit is used together with decanter centrifuge. It should pay attention to that: the chemicals should add on centrifuge feeding pump outlet pipe, and before enter into centrifuge. Variable frequency drive decanter centrifuge working principal and Application

Working principal of VFD decanter centrifuge:

GN use Netzsch Brand NEMO pump to feed the drilling mud into the feed tube and flow to the centrifuge bowl, the bowl rotates high speed under , the screw conveyor, which is inside the bowl ,get a differential speed through the gearbox. The bowl and conveyor compose the pulley and belt with the differential speed and rotates in the same direction.

Under the working of different centrifugal force , the heavier solids paticles is pushed to the inner bowl and pushed theought the screw to the solids discharge port, the lighter weight fluids is settle down and discharged through the fluids output port, which with 6pcs adjustable dams to adjust the fluids pond depth inside the centrifuge bow.

Viriable frequency drive decanter centrifuge can adjust the screw rotary speed to achieve different working purpose. For example, when start the centrifuge, firstly you start it with a low frequency to get a lower electric currency to protect the VFD control panle, when it works stably, you can adjust the frequency to your required data to get your required performance. For the drilling mud with high gravity solids, 2500rpm rotation speed is required; for the drilling fluids with low gravity solids, 3200rpm is recommend. To collect the barite, 1800rpm is recommend. But such recommendation is just for oil & gas drilling, not inludes food, waste water, etc.
